cause of cough and cold

Saturday, April 7, 2012

Different types of coughs and colds can attack us. One cause of cough and cold are quite often found in cough and cold is caused by allergies. The concept of allergic cough and cold has been known for a long time, even before the decade since the 1940s. It is classified as cough and cold allergy a very common disease. Approximately 20% of people of the entire population had a history of allergic cough and cold; by the number of cases slightly more often in men. This cough is generally not fatal to the sufferer but can interfere with quality of life if untreated.

What really happened on airway cough cold allergy sufferers? Cough cold allergy arise as a result of excessive immune reaction to a substance that is inhaled and potentially trigger an allergic reaction, also called an allergen inhalation. Examples of allergens that are inhaled grass, dust in the house, dust mites, pet dander, molds (fungi commonly attached to the wall or in a humid air-conditioning), and so forth. As a result of this excessive immune reaction, the production of chemicals that trigger inflammation increases. Chemicals, among others consist of histamine, bradykinin, serotonin, and so this can cause itching and mucus production in the airways is excessive. This is what the patient complained of allergies as a symptom of a runny nose and dry cough.

The hallmark of allergic cough and cold are the precipitating factors that stimulate cough and cold attacks. And when the trigger is removed, cold cough attacks will be reduced. In addition there is generally a history of other family members who also suffer from this disorder.

Colds are caused by allergies are generally characterized and stuffy runny nose, accompanied by sneezing and itching of the nose, eyes, and surrounding areas. While coughing due to allergies is usually a dry cough, persistent, and strong; and lasted for several hours to several days. Sufferers do not look sick. Similarly, if the patient is examined by a doctor, will not be visible physical signs are not normal.

This condition is in addition to attacking the nose and throat also cause several other symptoms, such as red eyes, headaches, watery eyes, weakness (malaise) and fatigue (fatigue), and sometimes pain in the ear.

To ascertain whether the cough, runny nose caused by allergies are experienced or not, consult with your doctor. If the cause of allergy is difficult to determine but there are suspicions that the cough, runny nose caused by allergies, your doctor may recommend laboratory tests. Your doctor may give drugs to suppress the production of chemical thrusters allergies, or simply by avoiding trigger factors and regulate the environment. Types of drugs suppressing the production of chemical thrusters common allergies are from a class given an antihistamine. If symptoms are severe enough, treatment of symptoms of cough and runny nose may also be required by the patient.

Speaking at AHS12

Monday, March 19, 2012

I'll be giving a 40 minute presentation at the Ancestral Health Symposium this summer titled "Digestive Health, Inflammation and the Metabolic Syndrome".  Here's the abstract:
The “metabolic syndrome” is a cluster of health problemsincluding abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, low-grade inflammation, highblood pressure and blood lipid abnormalities that currently affects one thirdof American adults.  It is thequintessential modern metabolic disorder and a major risk factor for diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.  Thistalk will explore emerging links between diet, gut flora, digestive health andthe development of the metabolic syndrome. The audience will learn about factors that may help maintain digestiveand metabolic health for themselves and the next generation.
Excessive fat mass is an important contributor to the metabolic syndrome, but at the same level of body fatness, some people are metabolically normal while others are extremely impaired.  Even among obese people, most of whom have the metabolic syndrome, about 20 percent are metabolically normal, with normal fasting insulin and insulin sensitivity, normal blood pressure, normal circulating inflammatory markers, and normal blood lipids.

What determines this?  Emerging research suggests that one factor is digestive health, including the bacterial ecosystem inside each person's digestive tract, and the integrity of the gut barrier.  I'll review some of this research in my talk, and leave the audience with actionable information for maintaining gastrointestinal and metabolic health.  Most of this information will not have been covered on this blog.

The Ancestral Health Symposium will be from August 9-12 at Harvard Law School in Boston, presented in conjunction with the Harvard Food Law society.  Tickets are currently available-- get them before they sell out!  Last year, they went fast.

See you there!

What Causes Insulin Resistance? Part I

Insulin is an ancient hormone that influences many processes in the body.  Its main role is to manage circulating concentrations of nutrients (principally glucose and fatty acids, the body's two main fuels), keeping them within a fairly narrow range*.  It does this by encouraging the transport of nutrients into cells from the circulation, and discouraging the export of nutrients out of storage sites, in response to an increase in circulating nutrients (glucose or fatty acids). It therefore operates a negative feedback loop that constrains circulating nutrient concentrations.  It also has many other functions that are tissue-specific.

Insulin resistance is a state in which cells lose sensitivity to the effects of insulin, eventually leading to a diminished ability to control circulating nutrients (glucose and fatty acids).  It is a major contributor to diabetes risk, and probably a contributor to the risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and a number of other disorders.

Why is it important to manage the concentration of circulating nutrients to keep them within a narrow range?  The answer to that question is the crux of this post.
